Rodeo is more than just a sport in Wyoming; it’s a cornerstone of our cultural identity and a living testament to the values we hold dear. They bring communities together, showcase our can-do spirit, and honor a way of life deeply rooted in our history.

This bill is a response to a proposal by PETA to replace Steamboat, the iconic bucking horse, on Wyoming license plates. Rodeo represents our living heritage, a vibrant and enduring tradition that continues to unite communities and showcase the values of perseverance, strength, and skill. PETA’s suggestion to sideline this symbol of Wyoming pride sparked a wave of opposition, highlighting just how deeply rodeo is interwoven with our identity. This effort to diminish rodeo’s prominence was a challenge to the legacy and traditions that define who we are as a state. SF 121 is our answer, a way to stand up for what we hold dear and reaffirm rodeo’s rightful place at the heart of Wyoming culture.

SF 121 would create a specialty license plate honoring rodeo as Wyoming’s official state sport. This is more than just a symbolic effort, the bill establishes a way to directly support Wyoming’s rodeo programs. Proceeds from the sale of these plates will be split evenly between the University of Wyoming and our community colleges, funding rodeo scholarships and programs. This initiative ensures our rodeo athletes have the opportunity to carry on the traditions that make Wyoming unique.

Our license plates are more than just vehicle identifiers—they’re symbols of what we stand for. By honoring rodeo, SF 121 reaffirms our commitment to preserving the values of hard work and resilience that this sport embodies. Investing in rodeo programs through this initiative also strengthens the connection between our past and future, keeping the spirit of Wyoming alive.

Let’s celebrate and protect Wyoming’s legacy. With SF 121, we can ensure that rodeo, our official state sport, remains at the heart of our identity while investing in the future of our communities.
